Health and Safety Advisor


Permanent, Full time (1 FTE)

We are seeking a capable individual with relevant skills and experience in the health and safety area to become part of the Health and Safety Team which will be based at the Petone campus, with a requirement to work across all campuses.

About the role | Te Kaupapa

Reporting to the Team Leader Health and Safety, you will work collaboratively with the wider team, who will guide and support you along the way to drive, influence and imbed health and safety into our organisation.

We are currently engaged in various initiatives to align the systems and practices of Whitireia and WelTec.  In this role there will be an opportunity for you to gain exposure to multiple aspects of health and safety in a complex environment. This role is a great opportunity for a health and safety professional looking to take on their next challenge and expand their horizon.

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure incidents are responded to in a timely manner, and followed up where an investigation is required.
  • Collaborate with the team to design and implement health and safety solutions.
  • Actively drive organisational change through reinforcing positive safety behaviours and modelling health and safety within the organisation.
  • Ensure training and revalidation of health and safety activities are arranged and recorded within the electronic SharePoint system.
  • Help to coordinate and facilitate our Health and Safety Representative network.
  • Conduct health and safety audits and reviews over all campuses ensuring all actions and outcomes are completed.
  • Ensure you keep up to date with various acts and regulations and have an awareness of programme deliveries and how they impact on health and safety.
  • Work closely with managers at all levels ensuring they are aware of their responsibilities and hazard/risk management requirements.
  • Assist your manager in monthly reporting to JLT.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have health and safety experience and working knowledge of the Health and Safety At Work Act (2015) and appropriate regulations. You will be customer focused, with a strong collaborative approach and the ability to tailor your approach to suit a variety of internal and external customers. Excellent communication and computer skills are a must as you will be working across all our campuses and talking with a variety of stakeholders.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

Ideally, you will have the following background and experience:

  • Relevant Health & Safety qualifications or a willingness to work towards one
  • New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) accreditation, or a willingness to work towards one
  • Experience in a Health and Safety Advisor or Coordinator role
  • A successful track record with persuading, coaching and influencing
  • A willingness to work independently and as part of a team on key projects
  • Strong organising and prioritising skills
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft programmes and data bases
  • Relationship and stakeholder management experience, including proven negotiation skills.
