Senior Platform Specialist
Permanent, Full-time (1 FTE)
Reporting to the Digital Technology Manager, this role is responsible for
ensuring the stability, integrity, security, and efficient operation of the
digital infrastructure at WelTec and Whitireia. Your duties will encompass
analysing platform performance, detecting and troubleshooting system problems,
and ensuring seamless operations. Working as part of a collaborative
infrastructure team, the environment supports 5,000+
staff, tutors, and students across multiple sites.
This is a networking‑focused role with scope to grow into senior responsibilities over time. Working with the team, you will contribute to the design, operation, and continuous improvement of network services across on‑premises and cloud environments. The role also provides supporting capability across server and cloud infrastructure to ensure end‑to‑end connectivity and platform reliability. This role is well suited to an intermediate engineer ready to step up into broader network ownership.
Primary Responsibility: Networking
- Contribute to the design, operation, and continuous improvement of networking services across all aspects of networking, including LAN, WAN, Wi‑Fi, firewalling, and security
- Working with the team and vendors to design, implement, and maintain robust, reliable, and secure network connectivity across cloud and on‑premises environments
- Participate in the delivery of network-related initiatives, working alongside the wider infrastructure team.
- Monitor network performance, identify issues, and proactively drive improvements to reliability and user experience
- Work closely with other infrastructure and platform specialists to ensure the network is fit-for-purpose and supports organisational needs
Secondary Responsibilities: Server infrastructure
- Develops working knowledge of cloud infrastructure services, particularly Microsoft 365 and Azure, and supports these platforms as part of a wider team.
- Will also have responsibility for support and maintenance of other Cloud areas such as Messaging and Identity, Microsoft Cloud Suite of Applications, Remote Access,
- Security, Monitoring, Backup/DR.
- Will maintain Windows server technologies (areas such as AD, DNS, DHCP, GPO’s, NPS etc) and applications, along with development and maintenance of powershell scripting and automation.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Strong enterprise or large-scale networking experience in complex environments
- Solid understanding of network security principles and best practices
- Experience supporting hybrid or cloud-connected infrastructure
- Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
Advantageous (but not required)
- Experience with Extreme Networks and/or Aerohive
- Experience in education or large user environments
